It started in 1999, when Mats showed up at Ray's house with half a ton of grapes and a used barrel from Etude.
By 2005 the garage habit had become a bonded winery. Today Ray Sliter — a Menlo Park kid and marine geologist by day — makes the wine the same stubborn way: keeping tight control of the fruit by buying only by the acre, so what's in the glass tastes like the place it came from.
The name says it all. Travieso is Spanish for mischievous — a little bad, in the best way. The labels, painted by artist Jody Brookens and designed by Chris Blum, pull from Mexican folklore: La Llorona, El Chupacabras, El Rey. Hidden-gem prices, an informal communal room, and some of the best price-to-bottle value in the Bay.
